India: Sesame Seed Market Is Lacking In Demand

India: Sesame Seed Market Is Lacking In Demand

The sesame seed market has been staying stable after it experienced a downward trend during the past few weeks. However, better price condition was expected for the sesame seeds in the market during this time.

Market Sentiment

Due to the Omicron variant of Covid-19, the demand in the international market for Sesame seed has been lacking. However, the new demand is expected, but no international purchase is going on in the market. As a result, there is no movement in the Sesame seed market.

The lack of export demand is creating panic in the market. The situation is expected to change once the impact of the new Covid variant lessens and the market starts getting back to normal.

According to traders, there is no movement in the Sesame seed market. Instead of any price hike, there have been price drops while the overall sentiment has been steady since the beginning of the month in the Sesame seed varieties, including the Black sesame seeds.

There was no demand for Sesame seeds in the domestic market in the last twenty days. Had there been an increase in the domestic demand, the prices for the Sesame seed could have gone up.

As mentioned earlier, the market has been steady due to the less arrival of the crop. According to experts, the arrival of new crops being less has kept the market steady despite the slowness in buying the seeds from the international market.

Market experts also stated that there wouldn’t be any new deals for the Sesame seed in the market anytime soon as it is the year-end.

There has also been news that the EU has imposed more vigorous checks on the Sesame seeds imported from India from the first week of November. The reason is there has been a continuation of pesticide contamination residue in the seeds and had to be recalled. It was reported that in September, high levels of ethylene oxide were found in certain batches of Sesame seeds that were sent or originated from India. It was notified through RASFF. Those batches revealed that ethylene oxide was over 1,000 times the maximum residue limit (MRL) of 0.05 milligrams per kg. As a result, there has been a significant slump in the export demand for Sesame seeds from the EU.

Arrivals

Total arrivals of the week are 1614.35 tonnes, and the maximum was from Gujarat 669.45 tonnes.

Prediction

It is now a wait-and-watch situation for the Indian sesame seed farmers and traders. Currently, the market is likely to stay between weak and steady until a new sesame seed tender arrives. After which, the changes in the market will become apparent.

Furthermore, the future of the sesame seed price depends on the winter season’s domestic demand. If the demand increases, the price can move up.
