The reason is there has been a continuation of pesticide contamination residue in the seeds and had to be recalled. It was reported that in September, high levels of ethylene oxide were found in certain batches of Sesame seeds that were sent or originated from India. It was notified through RASFF. Those batches revealed that ethylene oxide was over 1,000 times the maximum residue limit (MRL) of 0.05 milligrams per kg. As a result, there has been a significant slump in the export demand for Sesame seeds from the EU.
