Pisatchio Iran: 30 percent decrease in pistachio production

This year, 52,000 tons of pistachios were produced in Khorasan Razavi, which shows a 30 per cent decrease in pistachio production in this province compared to the previous year. Effects of drought, frost, heat, storms and low crop year have reduced pistachio production.

There are 116,000 hectares of pistachio orchards in Khorasan Razavi province, of which 75,000 hectares can be harvested. At present, the region ranks second in Iran in producing this product, with 25 per cent of the area under pistachio cultivation and 23 per cent of pistachio production. This year, 52,000 tons of pistachios were produced in Khorasan Razavi. About 700 kg of dried pistachios can be harvested from every 10,000 hectares under pistachio cultivation. The area under pistachio cultivation has increased by 3.7 per cent compared to last year in the province, while pistachio production has decreased by 30 per cent compared to the previous year. Pistachio production has decreased by 2 per cent compared to the area under cultivation.

A large part of the unfertilised areas is being constructed in the gardens of the province. This year, the low crop year has reduced production compared to last year. The product of pistachio tree is from the eighth year, and the product which has the economic profits is from the fifteenth year onwards. In general, the effects of drought, frost, heat, storms, and low crop years have reduced pistachio production. Compared to the last 20 years, 96,000 hectares of pistachio orchards have increased, and compared to the previous 10 years, about 50,000 hectares of pistachio orchards have risen. Based on this, the area under pistachio cultivation has grown five to eight per cent annually.

Over the past month, the demand for Iranian pistachios has increased in domestic and global markets, which has led to a rise in the price of this product. Export demand for Iranian pistachios has risen due to Christmas and New Year, which has led to an increase in the price of this product. Domestic demand has also gone up sharply due to Iran's ancient Yalda night ritual.
