A Decrease of More Than 60 Percent in the Export of Iranian Pistachios
The export rate of pistachios and pistachio kernels has declined by more than 60 percent in the first six months of this year compared to last year. The most important customers of Iranian pistachios and pistachio kernels have been India, United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Germany, Russia, China, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkey during the mentioned time.
According to the Iran customs statistics, 33,250 tons of Iranian pistachios and pistachio kernels worth 242,337,000 USD were exported from Iran between January and June 2022. The average price of the mentioned crops has been 7.29 USD per kg during this period.
Of this amount, 25,631 tons worth 156,633,000 USD (6.11 USD per kilogram) allocates to the shelled pistachios export, which has a share of 77 percent in terms of weight and 64.6 percent in terms of export value in this period. 7,214 tons worth 80,805,000 USD (11.2 USD per kilogram) are related to the export of Iranian pistachio kernels, which has a share of 21.7 percent in terms of weight and 33.3 percent in terms of export value. 307 tons of green pistachio kernels worth 3,844,000 USD (12.5 USD per kilogram) were exported from Iran, and 98 tons worth 1,055,000 USD were related to the export of other pistachio varieties.
The export rate of Iranian pistachios and pistachio kernels has declined sharply in the first six months of 2022 compared to the same time last year. 88,091 tons of pistachios and pistachio kernels worth 599,628,000 USD (6.81 USD per kilogram) were exported from Iran in the first six months of 2021. The export rate has dropped by 62 percent in terms of weight and by 60 percent in terms of export value in the first six months of this year compared to last year. The most important reason for the decrease in the export of this product is the decline in the market inventory due to the reduction in production last year. The decrease in the market inventory has led to an increase of about 7 percent in the average price of each kilogram of Iranian pistachios and pistachio kernels in the first six months of this year compared to last year.
India has been the most significant customer of Iranian pistachio and pistachio kernels in the first six months of 2022. During this period, 4,272 tons of pistachios and pistachio kernels worth 34,558,000 USD were exported from Iran to this country. After India, the United Arab Emirates has been the second most important customer of Iranian pistachios and pistachio kernels with imports of 4,140 tons worth 32,500,000 USD. Given that most of the shipments sent to the United Arab Emirates are re-exported to the main destinations of Iranian pistachios after entering the country with a change in packaging, branding, etc. Iraq is the third most significant customer of Iranian pistachios and pistachio kernels with imports of 4,116 tons worth 28,817,000 USD. Germany is the fourth export destination of Iranian pistachios and pistachio kernels in terms of weight with imports of 3,776 tons worth 33,219,000 USD. However, this country is the second export destination of this product after India in terms of export value. Other important export destinations of Iranian pistachios and pistachio kernels are Russia with imports of 3,139 tons worth 18,330,000 USD, China with imports of 2,071 tons worth 12,256,000 USD, Pakistan with imports of 2,036 tons worth 12,483,000 USD, Kyrgyzstan with imports of 1,528 tons worth 8,997,000 USD, and Turkey with imports of 1,489 tons worth 11,141,000 USD. Most pistachios sent to Turkey are re-exported from this country to the main destinations.
The cost of Iranian pistachios and pistachio kernels for export has fallen in the world markets compared to last month due to the decrease in export demand caused by the approaching of the pistachio harvest season and the increase in the foreign exchange rate against the Rial.
