The Rise in Celery Prices: Factors Impacting Production and Pricing

The market for celery is expected to remain strong in the coming weeks due to various factors affecting its production and demand.

The prices for the Jamnagar-Nandurbar line, including Jawra and Kurnool, have steadily increased for the past week, primarily because of low celery production. Additionally, Pakistani goods that would otherwise be sold in local markets are being diverted, further driving up demand for celery.

Producers find it expensive to buy celery from domestic shops, making it difficult to reduce prices. It is mainly produced in the border areas of Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Goods from the border areas of Pakistan and Gujarat are also being sold at a much lower rate, reducing the supply of goods in local markets by 90% in the last month.

The current celery crop has been deemed weak, making it harder for buyers to secure enough of the product. Ayurvedic companies also buy more of the Javra line due to a lack of celery in Nandurbar and Jamnagar. In contrast, the prices for ajwain in the Neemuch-Mandsaur area have decreased, and the arrival of goods in local shops has significantly reduced. Stockists had cut the old stock last year to avoid losses, leading to an average reduction of 22-25% in production in some areas.

Forecasts

Considering these circumstances, further increases in celery prices are expected. However, the market may rapidly intensify once subscriptions come out. Despite an undeniably uncertain future, the celery market can expect to remain strong in the foreseeable future due to the current demand-supply dynamics.

The celery seeds 99 purity prices were recorded at $1,58 per kg FOB.
