Ukraine Expects Positive Changes in the Flaxseed Market in 2023/24

Season 2022/23

Ukraine is expecting positive changes in the flaxseed market which lost its export orientation. In the season 2022/23 the share of exports in the harvest was reduced to 67% against 83% a year earlier. The export amounted to 17.6 thousand tons (-49% by 2021/22). The key importer was the EU.
  • The flaxseed sown area was +20% compared to season 2021/22. It was maximum over the last five seasons.
  • Productivity was low by 44% to the record 2021/22. It was minimum for the last four seasons.
  • Harvest – 27.5 thousand tons only.

Season 2023/24

In the current season, the areas of oil crops will be expanded due to their higher profitability compared to grains.

Flaxseed is no exception in Ukraine. The sown area is expected to increase to the maximum in the last 6 years. Productivity at the average level (lack of moisture becomes a restraining factor for obtaining high productivity). Total flax harvest is expected at the level of 40,000 tons.

The export potential of the flax market can recover. The declared export potential will traditionally depend on the demand from the EU countries, as well as logistics in the realities of wartime, which remains one of the urgent issues.
