Challenges and Prospects for Turkish Fig Farmers: Early Seasonal Changes and Export Concerns

With the mild winter and early arrival of spring in Türkiye this year, fig trees started to shed their leaves. As of April, revival began in the gardens. The efficiency of the harvest will become a little clearer for the new season around the end of April. According to weather experts, this summer seems to be hotter and drier than last summer, which may reduce the quality of figs, so farmers may start watering early. This season seems to be difficult for farmers, as early irrigation and spraying against diseases will start early, which may increase production costs, which may cause high prices for the new season.

While the harvest was low at the beginning of the season and the end of the season was coming early, exports were lower than normal. However, exports decreased significantly with the 9-day holiday starting on Friday. Market prices will be determined again for the remaining products after the holiday ends on April 15.
