Predicting a Spike: Garlic Prices Set to Climb Due to Strong Market Demand

Predicting a Spike: Garlic Prices Set to Climb Due to Strong Market Demand

Projected Increase in Garlic Prices

Garlic prices are likely to see a significant increase, ranging from $4,80 to $7,20 per 20 kg, according to industry expert Hasu Sanghvi. This comes as the market experiences robust demand, especially from southern regions, creating a bullish atmosphere for garlic.

Recently, the price for 20 kg of premium garlic has escalated from $26,40 to $27,60. This rise results from a surge in demand over the past 15 days, with prices increasing by $0.24 to $0.30 per kg. Despite high demand, the income generated from garlic remains modest. Only 20% of revenue comes from high-quality garlic, while the larger portion stems from lesser quality produce, which is more abundant.

Regional Production and Quality Distribution

This year, garlic production in Saurashtra has seen a 40% increase. Conversely, production levels in Madhya Pradesh remain steady compared to last year, and in Rajasthan, production is expected to be one and a half times higher. Currently, only 20% of Saurashtra’s crop and 30% to 40% of the combined Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh crop have been harvested and entered the market.

Premium Garlic and Export Potentials

The premium 'Unti' quality garlic, predominantly popular in southern regions, commands a high market price ranging from $3,00 to $3,60 per kg. Although there is interest in exporting to Bangladesh, significant export activities have yet to materialize. The anticipation of growing export businesses could further propel the market.

Farmers' Response to Market Conditions

Farmers, in response to the low income from garlic, have halted sales in hopes of better prices. The overall market momentum now heavily depends on the sustained demand for garlic. Given the current trends, there is little likelihood for a price decrease from the current levels.

Subsequent Market Predictions

As demand for garlic seeds increases, prices could soar to $48 to $60 per 20 kg, suggests Mukesh Satasia. In Gondal, garlic prices have recently risen from $16.80 to $18 per 20 kg, reaching as high as $42 to $43.20.

Garlic prices are expected to fluctuate between $0.12 and $0.36 per kg until July, as stated by Ravi Malpani. Despite this volatility, no significant price hike is anticipated in the near term. The market's stability will largely depend on upcoming weather conditions and the associated impacts on crop yield and quality.
