Ukraine's Spring Crop Sowing Surge Promises Expanded Planting Area

Amidst a flurry of sowing activities, Ukraine anticipates an increase in the sown area for spring crops. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the following areas have been planted with grain and leguminous crops across Ukrainian territories:
  • Barley: 775.7 thousand hectares (compared to 712.2 thousand hectares last year)
  • Wheat: 240.7 thousand hectares (compared to 236 thousand hectares)
  • Peas: 161.1 thousand hectares (compared to 128.6 thousand hectares)
  • Oats: 159.9 thousand hectares (compared to 132.2 thousand hectares)
  • Millet: 16.7 thousand hectares (compared to 8.4 thousand hectares)
  • Buckwheat: 5 thousand hectares (compared to 3.05 thousand hectares)
  • Corn: 1.9607 million hectares (compared to 1.059 million hectares)

Additionally, the following crops have been sown:

  • Sunflower: 2.9675 million hectares (compared to 1.485 million hectares)
  • Soybean: 566.7 thousand hectares (compared to 173.6 thousand hectares)
  • Sugar beets: 248.4 thousand hectares (compared to 179.2 thousand hectares)
In the past week alone, 861,000 hectares of land were sown with hot crops, including:
  • In Kyiv region: Wheat (31.3 thousand hectares), barley (43.1 thousand hectares), peas (5.8 thousand hectares), and oats (6 thousand hectares)
  • In Dnipropetrovsk region: Wheat (28 thousand hectares), barley (50 thousand hectares), peas (14.17 thousand hectares), and oats (1 thousand hectares)
  • In Ternopil Oblast: Wheat (18,900 hectares), barley (63,600 hectares), peas (3,600 hectares), and oats (5,100 hectares)
  • In Sumy region: Wheat (18.2 thousand hectares), barley (17.9 thousand hectares), peas (5.6 thousand hectares), and oats (9.8 thousand hectares)
  • In Zhytomyr Oblast: Wheat (16,500 hectares), barley (19,300 hectares), peas (3,000 hectares), and oats (26,000 hectares)
  • In Khmelnytskyi region: Wheat (14.8 thousand hectares), barley (59.1 thousand hectares), peas (2.6 thousand hectares), and oats (2.5 thousand hectares)
  •  In Vinnytsia: Wheat (11,500 hectares), barley (55,000 hectares), peas (6,000 hectares), and oats (1,100 hectares)
The dry and cool weather forecasted for the coming weeks bodes well for farmers, allowing them to complete sowing within optimal timeframes.

It is worth noting that forecasts predict an increase in the area of grain, technical, vegetable, melon, and fodder crops in 2024 compared to the previous year.
