Garlic Prices Surge: Factors Driving Historic Increase in Garlic Prices

For the second consecutive year, garlic prices are on the rise, driven by high demand from farmers and traders. Positive sentiments prevail, fueled by various factors including income pressure in Rajasthan, Himachal region, Kashmir, Punjab, and Gujarat, along with decreased demand due to May's heat.

Market Stability and Production Trends

Despite external actions, such as high prices and stockist retreats, the market remains stable. A key production hub, Madhya Pradesh, has only 40 to 45 percent of the year's production remaining. Rajasthan, however, is experiencing a shortage of goods, significantly impacting market dynamics.

Global Market Trends and Export Prospects

Global markets, particularly China, are witnessing low stocks, which is expected to result in high prices in the coming year. India's export prospects remain bleak due to historical pricing trends. Despite rumors of imports, no country can supply garlic below $1.20 due to various charges.

Domestic Production and Price Trends, Future Outlook and Market Predictions

Garlic cultivation has increased by 20 percent this year across India. However, prices may rise by $0,60 to $0,84 per kg between May 15 and July 1. Rajasthan is facing income pressure, affecting daily packets received and prices per kg.

The market is expected to boom, similar to 2010, with prices potentially reaching $2,40 per kg. Factors like increased cultivation in certain states and stable Chinese prices will influence future trends. The first price surge is expected in the month of Shravan, with another surge around Diwali.

Despite challenges, the garlic market remains robust, with demand driving prices. As the season progresses, prices are expected to stabilize, offering better returns for quality produce. The future of the garlic market looks promising, with potential opportunities for farmers and traders alike.
