Coriander Prices Soar as Low Arrivals and Weather Impact Supply

Coriander Prices Soar as Low Arrivals and Weather Impact Supply

General Elections and Weather Influence Supply in Major Producing States

In key producing states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, coriander arrivals in mandis remain low despite the elections. This limited arrival has caused a slight increase in the wholesale price of this essential grocery commodity. Market experts predict that coriander prices will stay strong in the spot market in the coming days. Farmers in major producing states have already limited the sale of coriander due to lower-than-expected prices. The general elections have further reduced arrivals. Consequently, there has been a noticeable decline in coriander arrivals in major mandis, including Ramganj. Current reports indicate that arrivals in Ramganj Mandi have dropped to about 6-7 thousand bags, while Baran Mandi has received approximately 1.5-2 thousand bags.

Conference Predictions Affect Coriander Prices

An industrial and trade conference held in early March predicted a decrease in coriander production compared to the previous season. This prediction initially led to a significant increase in wholesale prices. However, as arrivals increased, a downward trend in prices began to emerge. Additionally, recent weather changes have also impacted wholesale prices. Trade sources indicate higher sowing of coriander in Madhya Pradesh this season, while Rajasthan's sowing levels are similar to last year. In contrast, Gujarat's sowing is significantly behind. Traders are divided on the possible sowing of the new coriander crop. Some believe sowing may decrease, while others disagree.

Current Market Prices and Export Statistics Highlight Strong Performance

In Ramganj Mandi, coriander Badami and Eagle varieties have increased by $2,40 recently, currently priced at $0,79/0,81 and $0,84/0,86 per kg, respectively. In Baran Mandi, their prices are $0,76/0,79 and $0,81/0,84 per kg. These prices have increased by about $1.20-1.80. In the wholesale grocery market in the capital, coriander Badami has risen by $6,00-7,20, currently at $104.40/105.60 per quintal. According to the Spices Board, India exported 1,00,333.98 tonnes of coriander worth $10,45 million in the first eleven months of the financial year 2023-24. In the corresponding period a year ago, 41,515.88 tonnes were exported, earning $6,64 million. Given the current trends and low arrivals, coriander prices are expected to remain strong in the spot market.
