Early May's good pre-monsoon rains started the turmeric sowing season in Kamaraj Nagar. Consequently, these favorable conditions likely boost demand for high-yielding seed varieties. Farmers have shown increased interest in high-productivity turmeric varieties developed by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Kamaraj Nagar.

Demand for High-Yielding Turmeric Varieties Increases

Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Kamaraj Nagar developed several high-yielding turmeric varieties, including IIS SR Pratibha and Alleppey. Notably, these varieties, developed by the Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) in Calicut, Kerala, offer high curcumin content and resistance to insects and diseases.

Significant Price Increase

Last year, farmers cultivated turmeric over 8,700 hectares in Kamaraj Nagar. This year, the area is expected to exceed 10,000 hectares. Farmers are motivated by high turmeric prices, which have reached $9 to $9,6 per kg this season, compared to $3 to $3,6 per kg last year. Consequently, this significant price increase has made turmeric cultivation highly profitable
