Malatya Apricot Market Slows Amid Eid al-Adha Holiday and Farmer Concerns Over Costs

Malatya Apricot Market Slows Amid Eid al-Adha Holiday and Farmer Concerns Over Costs

Malatya is having a quiet week. It has been a week where the last remaining stocks were sold slowly. There will be a 10 days public holiday due to Eid al-Adha, which will start next weekend. This is an important reason for the slowdown.

Farmers started the new season fresh apricot harvest in low altitudes. The fact that the air temperatures were higher than seasonal norms caused the start of the fresh apricot harvest in some places. The real intensive collection work will begin after the 10 days holiday.

High labor costs

Farmers are very worried about the high labor costs. They can only make money if fresh apricots are sold for around 50 TL/kg or 1,44€/kg. The market is around 25 TL or 0,72€. Since the low sales price of fresh apricots will reduce the price of dried apricots in the market, both fresh apricot producers and dried apricot producers are very disturbed by this situation.

The new season harvest determination studies are about to be completed and it is expected to be announced before the holidays. Expectations of a high harvest amount are also very effective in decreasing prices. On the other hand, farmers are very insistent that agricultural irrigation prices should not decrease due to an increase of around 400%. Rising labor costs and increased production costs such as irrigation and spraying require that prices for both fresh apricots and dried apricots not be below a certain level.

Export prices remain at the same level as last week. It will become clear after the new season amount is announced.
