Brazil's April Sugar Exports Hit Record High



In the first official month of the 2024/25 Brazilian sugarcane harvest, sugar exports continued at a high level. The volume of sweetener sent to other countries in April was 1.89 million tons, an increase of 94.7% compared to the same period in 2023. In the monthly comparison, on the other hand, there was a drop of 29.5%.



Detailed export data was released by the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC) last Wednesday, 8th.
  • With an average price of US$517.33 per ton, an annual increase of 8.6%, monthly revenue reached US$976.5 million, more than double the amount seen in April of the previous year, US$461.77 million.
  • In relation to March, the average value recorded a drop of 4.1%, while revenue fell 32.4%. The FOB price for sugar IC45 was noted at $555.00 per ton, highlighting a specific market value within the export figures.

Raw and Refined Sugar

Considering the type of product, Brazil shipped 1.61 million tons of raw sugar, an increase of 89.9% compared to the 846 thousand tons seen in April 2023. In the monthly comparison, in turn, there was a decrease of 27,000 tons. 9%.

The average price registered an increase of 7.3% compared to the previous year, to US$499.97; the value, however, registered a drop of 4.6% in the monthly comparison. Thus, revenue from raw sugar reached US$803.68 million in April, an increase of 103.9% compared to the US$394.21 million seen in the same period last year.

The remaining 280 thousand tons were of refined sweetener, an increase of 128.1% compared to April 2023. Compared to the previous month, there was a drop of 37.8%. Negotiated for an average of US$616.98/t, the product generated revenue of US$172.82 million – an annual increase of 155.8%.
