Pará Leads Brazil's Cocoa Production with 149,396 Tons in 2023

The state of Pará is the absolute leader in cocoa production in Brazil. According to the Executive Committee of the Cocoa Farming Plan (Ceplac), Pará produced 149,396 tons of cocoa beans in 2023. The trans-Amazonian region represents 80% of production in the state. Bahia, historically leader in the ranking, now occupies second place; while Rondônia is the 3rd largest producer of cocoa.

Brazil is the 7th largest cocoa producer in the world. Brazilian cocoa is produced with history, tradition, and in agroforestry systems that preserve the Atlantic forest and the Amazon.

The attractiveness of the fruit, of Amazonian origin, has been increasing, especially among small producers of fine chocolates.

The Brazilian market already exports the fruit to France, Germany and some Asian countries, with emphasis on international commerce and restaurants. Sebrae technical analyst Victor Ferreira told “entrepreneurial power” that the expanding market demands transparency regarding the production process, especially related to sustainability. “Consumers are demanding more in terms of proof of sustainability, how production is carried out, social and labor issues. It’s a trend that has no return”, he explained.

For 2024, there is a forecast of an increase in the sector's revenue from May, when the fruit harvest begins, informed the ministry. Despite the favorable scenario, the success of productions depends on future weather conditions.
