MSME's Lead Chia Seed Exports in South American Countries
Chia seeds were one of the most manufactured products sent by MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) to the international market, reaching a total of USD 23 million last year, according to data from the Rediex Competitive Intelligence Directorate.
Throughout 2023, micro, small and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) added USD 277 million in exports, with chia being the main product shipped.
In 2023, 42,000 tons were sent to 55 countries, positioning Paraguay as a leader in the production and marketing of these seeds.
According to official data, the main market for Paraguayan chia is the United States, with exports of USD 12 million; followed by Poland, Australia and the Netherlands, all worth more than $1 million.
Blankets, which reached a shipment value of USD 23 million in 2023, are other products with good export volume by MSMEs, while rice added a total of USD 19 million.
On the other hand, wheat reached a total of USD 18 million.
