Sales Are Low Despite Corianders Arrivals Being Low
Current Market Scenario
The coriander market is currently in an unusual state, with sales remaining low despite limited arrivals in central producing states. This anomaly has been caused by farmers, who, dissatisfied with the lower-than-expected prices, have restricted their sales. As a result, significant mandis like Ramganj and Baran have experienced reduced activity. This sluggish environment is expected to persist in the spot market in the coming days.Currently, Ramganj Mandi sees about 3,500 to 4,000 sacks of coriander, while Baran records approximately 1,500 to 2,000 sacks. An industrial and trade conference held in early March predicted a decrease in coriander production compared to the previous season. This announcement initially led to a significant rise in wholesale prices. However, the trend reversed as arrivals increased, and weather changes, such as unexpected rainfall, further influenced prices.Â
Regional Sowing Patterns and Price Fluctuations
Sowing patterns across different states have shown varied trends. Madhya Pradesh has reported increased coriander sowing, while Rajasthan's sowing levels remain consistent with the current season. In contrast, Gujarat has seen a significant lag in sowing activities. Traders are divided on the outlook for the new crop's sowing. Some anticipate a decrease, while others expect stable or increased sowing levels.In Rajasthan's Ramganj Mandi, the prices for coriander varieties Badami and Eagle have risen in recent days. Baran Mandi reports similar price levels. The wholesale grocery market in the capital also experienced a slight increase in coriander Badami prices, following a prior decline.
Export Performance and Future Outlook
Despite the domestic market challenges, coriander exports have shown a promising increase. According to the Spices Board, 1,08,624 tonnes of coriander were exported during the financial year 2023-24. This represents a significant increase from the previous year when 54,481 tonnes were exported.This robust export performance not only highlights the potential for exporters to capitalize on international demand despite domestic market fluctuations but also inspires confidence in the industry's ability to expand its global presence. The rising export figures underscore the importance of maintaining quality and meeting global standards, paving the way for sustained and expanded market presence.
