Early Harvest and Rising Costs Challenge Turkish Apricot Production and Export Market
The first harvest of fresh apricots was collected last week. The early and high temperatures this year have caused the apricots to become more sugary, which will increase the quality of dried apricots. This season, buyers abroad will be able to import higher quality apricots. Of course, this will be partially reflected in the new season prices. However, the real impact on the price will be the increase in electricity prices as of July.
After the 30% increase in electricity prices, the costs of farmers will increase significantly and this situation will harm the sustainability of apricot production. Many farmers could not fully compensate for their damage after the earthquake, and the increase in costs may cause some farmers to stop production. For this reason, farmers demand the withdrawal of the increase in agriculture. It is still unclear what the state's reaction will be. However, if the new season is entered in this way, exports may also suffer losses due to the increase in market prices.
Weekly dried apricot exported 827 mt on 29 June, same week last year 424 mt were shipped. At 63,367 mt, total exports are according to last year same week 18% decreased.
