Malatya Farmers Frustrated by Low Apricot Prices

Malatya Farmers Frustrated by Low Apricot Prices

In Malatya, the capital of dried apricots, the decrease in apricot prices is on the agenda again. While farmers complain about increased labor productivity, the low price of the new crop apricots has made the farmers very angry.

Yield games

They argue that the 107 thousand tons of yield announced this year is to keep the price low. Although the adverse weather conditions in winter and spring affect the yield, high temperatures as of June show that the quality of apricots in the new season will be better than last year. For this reason, farmers want to be rewarded for their labor.

Although the prices of dried apricots for the new season are not yet known, the market value of fresh apricots causes us to estimate the prices of dried apricots more or less. The season will start between 5000 USD and 6000 USD. The predictions are in this direction. The first crops have started to dry, exporters predict that new season shipments can start within 1 month. Prices will become clear within 1 month. Currently, exporters are avoiding giving prices.

Last week, 795 metric tons of dried apricots were exported, more than in the same week last year. In total, however, 64,164 metric tons of dried apricots have been exported so far, less than last year.
