Vietnam and Thai Rice Prices Fall

Vietnam and Thai Rice Prices Fall

Impact of Easing Indian Export Restrictions

As of July 11, rice export prices from Vietnam have slipped to their lowest levels in a year, with Thai rates also dropping amid lackluster demand. Traders are anticipating potential easing of restrictions by India, the top rice exporter. Vietnam's 5% broken rice was offered at $0.57-$0.58 per kg, down from $0,575 the previous week. Sales remain slow as buyers expect India to ease its export restrictions. Vietnam's rice shipments in June fell 40% from May to 513,409 tons, but exports for the first half of the year rose 7.4% to 4.55 million tons.

Anticipated Changes in Rice Supply and Demand

Thailand's 5% broken rice dropped to $0,57-$0,575 per kg, its lowest level since early April, down from $0,585 last week. Traders in Bangkok report no significant orders and rely on regular customers. Additional supply is expected, with clarity on yield improvements anticipated in August. Meanwhile, India's 5% broken parboiled variety was quoted at $0,54-$0,545 per kg this week, down from $0,548 last week due to sluggish demand driven by higher freight rates and rupee depreciation. Demand has been weak recently, with buyers postponing purchases after aggressive buying in May.

Bangladesh's High Domestic Prices Amid Favorable Harvests

In Bangladesh, domestic rice prices remain high despite favorable harvests and ample reserves, straining consumers. The situation may worsen as flooding has submerged vast croplands, potentially affecting future rice production. This adds to the regional market dynamics, influencing rice prices across Asia. Traders and producers are closely monitoring these developments to anticipate market shifts and adjust their strategies accordingly.

In summary, rice prices in Vietnam and Thailand have dipped to yearly lows as markets await potential changes in India's export policy. Market dynamics, including supply trends and regional influences, will continue to shape rice prices in Asia.
