Severe Heat Threatens Late Crop Yields in Ukraine

Hydrometeorological Center Warns of Significant Yield Reduction

Adverse Weather Conditions Across Ukraine

The Hydrometeorological Center has issued a concerning report detailing the potential impact of ongoing adverse weather conditions on late crop yields in Ukraine. According to the report titled "Operational information on adverse agrometeorological conditions in July 2024 and their influence on the formation of the harvest of late agricultural crops in Ukraine," central, eastern, and southern regions are experiencing severe heat and drought. These conditions are likely to continue and could reduce the yield of late crops by 20-30%.

Spread of Air and Soil Drought

Since the end of June, air drought has gripped Ukraine, with many regions also suffering from soil drought. By July 15, these drought conditions had spread across large swathes of agricultural land, impacting areas where approximately 30-50% of late crops are sown.

Impact on Crop Development

Meteorologists note that the abnormally high average daily temperatures and rapid accumulation of effective heat, which has significantly exceeded long-term averages since the beginning of the growing season, are accelerating the development phases of soybean, sunflower, and corn plants. This rapid development could lead to the premature drying of plants.

Corn Particularly Vulnerable

Corn, which requires substantial moisture during its flowering period, is particularly vulnerable to high temperatures. The depletion of soil moisture reserves and heat stress in some fields have resulted in wilting, halted growth, yellowing, and drying of leaves and stems. In extreme cases, entire plants have perished.

"Heat causes sterilization of pollen, poor pollination of plants, and improper formation of cobs, which ultimately reduces the final yield," the report highlights.

Negative Effects on Sunflower Crops

Sunflower crops are also at risk due to the dry and hot weather. These conditions can lead to the formation of smaller seeds and, consequently, a decrease in overall yield.

Upcoming Weather Relief

Meteorologists forecast some relief after July 18-20, with short-term rains and thunderstorms expected in the western regions. These weather changes are anticipated to lower temperatures to a more manageable 25-28°C.

As a writer closely following the agricultural sector, it is evident that Ukraine's farmers face significant challenges this season. The Hydrometeorological Center's report underscores the critical need for adaptive strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on agriculture. Policymakers and agricultural experts must collaborate to support farmers through this tough period, ensuring that the backbone of Ukraine's economy remains resilient in the face of escalating climatic threats.
