Ukrainian Farmers Exceed Last Year's Harvest Pace Despite Lower Average Yields

Harvest Progress and Crop Yields

Ukrainian farmers are actively harvesting, with the pace surpassing last year's efforts. As of July 20, 2023, 15.7 million tons of grain and oil crops have been threshed from 4.4 million hectares of land. This is a significant increase compared to the same date in 2022, where 5.888 million tons were harvested from 1.49 million hectares. However, the average yield is somewhat lower this year.

Detailed Crop Yields

  • Wheat:Harvested from 2.626 million hectares (60% of the area), yielding 10.3 million tons at 3.92 tons/ha. This is down from 4.12 tons/ha in 2023 and 4.11 tons/ha in 2021, but higher than 2.88 tons/ha in 2022.
  • Barley: 3.1 million tons were collected from 824.2 thousand hectares (66% of the area), with an average yield of 3.76 tons/ha, compared to 3.9 tons/ha in 2023 and 4.29 tons/ha in 2021.
  • Peas: Harvested 319.3 thousand tons from 154.7 thousand hectares (95% of the area) at a yield of 2.06 tons/ha, compared to 2.46 tons/ha in 2023.
  • Rapeseed: 1.8 million tons were collected from 779.1 thousand hectares (65% of the area) at a yield of 2.31 tons/ha, slightly down from 2.47 tons/ha in 2023.
  • Soybeans: 0.29 thousand tons were harvested from 0.15 thousand hectares.

Regional Harvest Leaders

Farmers in the Kherson region have also begun to harvest millet. The leading regions in terms of harvesting are:
  • Odesa: 629.4 thousand hectares threshed
  • Dnipropetrovsk: 544.2 thousand hectares threshed
  • Mykolaiv: 527.5 thousand hectares threshed

Highest Yield Recorded

The Ivano-Frankivsk region reported the highest yield, achieving an impressive 6.51 tons/ha.

The active harvesting in Ukraine showcases the resilience and efficiency of its agricultural sector, even amidst lower average yields. As farmers continue to work diligently, the focus remains on maximizing output and ensuring that the crops reach markets efficiently. This season's performance underscores the importance of strategic planning and resource management in overcoming climatic and logistical challenges.
