Clouds Of Uncertainty Hover Upon Ginger As Prices Are Expected To Remain Stable
Current Market Scenario
The monsoon season is currently affecting various regions in India. Due to this, the prices of Saunth (dry ginger) have remained stable. There is no expectation of a price increase for Saunth in the spot market in the near future. The monsoon rains have created a flood situation in several states, including Assam and Meghalaya. In contrast, North Indian states, including Delhi, have experienced weaker-than-average rainfall. Despite this, the demand for Saunth remains sluggish.Ginger Supply and Pricing
Recently, the arrival of ginger from Bangalore has increased in Delhi’s wholesale fruit and vegetable market. This influx has caused ginger prices to drop by per kilogram. Previously, prices had surged, reaching a record high. This spike led farmers to sell almost their entire ginger crop. In Kochi, the wholesale price of ginger recently reached a new high. Due to weaker-than-average arrivals and availability, there is insufficient ginger to produce dry ginger. This scarcity has led to a rise in dry ginger sales by stockists. The current price of regular dry ginger in Kochi has decreased. Sporadic arrivals of new dry ginger continue, with high prices reported.Factors Influencing Price Stability
The primary reason for the current price stability is that producers have sold approximately 90-95 per cent of their ginger due to attractive prices earlier in the season. The recent slight decrease in dry ginger prices has not significantly impacted the market. In Kochi, the arrival of new dry ginger remains minimal, with prices recently dropping slightly per kilogram. There is no expectation of a significant price increase for dry ginger in the coming days.
