Mustard Arrivals Estimates of Major Producing States In India

Current Season's Mustard Arrivals in Mandis

The arrival of mustard in the mandis of major producing states has started decreasing, although farmers still hold a substantial stock. Anil Chatar, Managing Director of Marudhar Trading Agency, has estimated the arrival of a total of 7.9 million tonnes of mustard in producing mandis and government procurement centers during the first five months of the current marketing season (March-February) 2024-25.
  • In March 2024, 1.55 million tonnes arrived in mandis, and 10 thousand tonnes at procurement centers.
  • In April, the arrivals were 1.5 million tonnes in mandis and 1.38 million tonnes at procurement centers.
  • May saw 1.1 million tonnes in mandis and 560 thousand tonnes at procurement centers.
  • June recorded 900 thousand tonnes in mandis and 50 thousand tonnes at procurement centers.
  • July saw 850 thousand tonnes of mustard in mandis, with no arrivals at procurement centers.
  • This totals 5.9 million tonnes supplied to mandis and 2 million tonnes to government procurement centers over five months.

Mustard Production and Availability

Industry trade organizations estimate a total production of 12.3 million tonnes of mustard in the Rabi season of 2023-24. This includes 5.3 million tonnes from Rajasthan, 1.8 million tonnes from Uttar Pradesh, 1.6 million tonnes from Madhya Pradesh, 1.2 million tonnes from Punjab-Haryana, 500 thousand tonnes from Gujarat, and 1.9 million tonnes from other states including Bengal and Bihar.

Out of the total production, 700 thousand tonnes arrived in February 2024. Therefore, 11.6 million tonnes of mustard was available for the marketing season of 2024-25. On March 1, 2024, about 1.2 million tonnes of old stock was present, bringing the total availability to 12.8 million tonnes. NAFED and HAFED had a previous stock of 750 thousand tonnes. With the purchase of 2 million tonnes during the season, the total stock increased to 2.75 million tonnes. Of this, 25 thousand tonnes have been sold.

Current Stock and Crushed Mustard Figures

After selling 7.9 million tonnes out of the original production of 11.6 million tonnes, producers were left with a stock of 3.7 million tonnes of mustard on August 1, 2024. Out of the total arrival of 5.9 million tonnes, 5.45 million tonnes of mustard were crushed, leaving a stock of 450 thousand tonnes.

The mustard market has seen significant activity in the first five months of the current marketing season. Despite a decrease in arrivals, substantial stocks remain with farmers and procurement centers.
