Ukraine's Grain Harvest Reaches 28.459 Million Tons as of Mid-August

Strong Harvest Progress Amid Challenging Conditions

Ukraine has made significant progress in its grain and leguminous crop harvest for the 2024/25 marketing year. According to the latest operational data from the Ministry of Agriculture, as of August 15, a total of 28.459 million tons have been threshed from 6.713 million hectares, representing 61% of the total area. The average yield stands at 4.24 tons per hectare, reflecting a resilient agricultural sector despite the challenges.

Breakdown of Key Crops

The harvest data shows a strong performance across several key crops:
  • Wheat: 21.68 million tons have been harvested from 4.85 million hectares, achieving 100% of the planned area with an impressive yield of 4.47 tons per hectare.
  • Barley: The barley harvest also reached completion, with 5.48 million tons collected from 1.4 million hectares, yielding 3.92 tons per hectare.
  • Peas: Nearly complete, the pea harvest stands at 458.5 thousand tons from 207.6 thousand hectares, with a yield of 2.21 tons per hectare.
  • Buckwheat and Millet: Both crops are still in the early stages of harvest, with 2.4 thousand tons of buckwheat and 9.5 thousand tons of millet collected so far.

Oil Crops Harvest Update

In addition to grain and legumes, Ukraine has also made progress in harvesting oil crops:
  • Rapeseed: 3.358 million tons have been harvested from 1.23 million hectares, with a yield of 2.74 tons per hectare.
  • Soybeans: The soybean harvest remains minimal, with just 1 thousand tons collected from 0.7 thousand hectares.
  • Sunflower: Early harvest figures show 3.8 thousand tons collected from 4.2 thousand hectares, with a yield of 0.9 tons per hectare.

Grain Exports Surge Ahead of Last Year

Ukraine's grain export pace is significantly ahead of last year's figures, with exports up by 60%. As of August 15, 5.529 million tons of grain and leguminous crops have been exported, with 1.827 million tons shipped in August alone. This compares favorably to the same period last year, when 3.299 million tons were exported.

Crop-Specific Export Data

  • Wheat: 2.608 million tons have been exported, up from 1.328 million tons at the same point last year.
  • Barley: Exports have reached 640 thousand tons, compared to 397 thousand tons last year.
  • Rye: A slight decrease with 0.3 thousand tons exported, down from 0.6 thousand tons.
  • Corn: Corn exports stand at 2.061 million tons, an increase from 1.568 million tons in the previous year.

Flour Exports See Decline

Flour exports in the current season have reached 7.3 thousand tons, of which 6.6 thousand tons are wheat flour. This marks a significant decrease from the same period in the 2023/24 marketing year, where 15.8 thousand tons of flour were exported, including 15.2 thousand tons of wheat flour.

Ukraine's agricultural sector is demonstrating resilience in the face of ongoing challenges, with solid progress in the grain and oil crop harvests. The surge in export activity highlights the country’s pivotal role in global grain markets. However, the decline in flour exports signals potential areas of concern that may need to be addressed as the season progresses.
