India has made a significant breakthrough in the coffee industry by standardising tissue culture technology. This achievement, a first in the world, marks a turning point in the cultivation of coffee in India. The Coffee Board, in collaboration with Jain Irrigation, has paved the way for a more productive and sustainable future for coffee growers. Standardisation of Tissue Culture Technology

This advancement was formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Coffee Board and Jain Irrigation. The collaboration aims to commercially release coffee plants developed using this technology to growers across the country. Jain Irrigation has dedicated six years to the evaluation and development of this tissue culture technology in partnership with the Coffee Board. The result is a robust and reliable protocol. That can be applied to produce high-yielding coffee plants on a large scale.

High-Yielding Varieties Identified

Seven high-yielding varieties of robustas and arabicas have been identified as ideal candidates for tissue culture multiplication. These varieties were selected through a rigorous process involving both growers and scientists. Over the past few years, tissue culture-propagated plants have been tested in the field. Demonstrating superior performance compared to traditional varieties. The adoption of tissue culture technology offers several advantages over conventional methods. Unlike the seed-based approach, tissue culture allows for the rapid multiplication of planting material without limitations on quantity. Moreover, plants produced through tissue culture are disease-free and genetically uniform. Which can lead to higher yields and improved coffee quality.

Commercialization and Distribution

As part of the MoU, Jain Irrigation will take on the responsibility of multiplying and selling the tissue culture coffee plants directly to growers. A royalty will be paid to the Coffee Board for each sale. The price of these plants will be determined by market forces, ensuring a competitive and fair process for all stakeholders. To facilitate the distribution of these plants, Jain Irrigation plans to establish dealerships and contact points in vital coffee-growing regions such as Chikmagalur and Madikeri. This network will provide growers with easy access to the new planting material, along with the necessary support and information.

Addressing Quality Concerns

The introduction of tissue culture technology is expected to address a significant concern among coffee growers in India—the lack of good-quality planting material. The last significant development in this area was the release of the Chandragiri arabica variety in 2007. With India being the seventh-largest coffee producer in the world, producing around 350,000 tonnes annually, and the fifth-largest exporter, the need for quality planting material is critical. India exports over two-thirds of its coffee production, competing with major coffee-producing nations like Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, and Indonesia. The release of the new arabica variety 4595, which shows resistance to the white stem borer through tissue culture, will further strengthen India's position in the global coffee market.

Jain Irrigation has been a pioneer in the development of tissue culture technology. Their expertise in improving crops such as bananas and pomegranates has now been extended to coffee.
