Why Are Turkish Grape Farmers Angry?
Farmers in Manisa rebelled again because of the prices. This time the reaction was to the prices of discarded grapes. The prices of discarded grapes started this season at 20 TL or 0,53€ this year (sold at 16 TL or 0,42€ last year), dropped to 7 TL or 0,18€. Farmers were making a profit from the sale of discarded grapes as well as quality grapes. Farmers who started this season partially damaged due to the rains also lost the money they would have earned from poor quality grapes. They dumped baskets full of grapes on the ground to show their reaction. They urgently await state support. The fact that TMO prices are not at a sufficient level and TMO is not purchasing in sufficient quantities has left farmers in a difficult situation.
For now, exporters are stocking as many raisins as they sell. The fact that buyers do not make long-term contracts due to the high prices also causes exporters to buy as much raisins as they need. The expected export price is 5 USD at the end of December and the beginning of January, but will raisins, which are currently at 3-4 USD, reach 5 dollars?
This will be clearer according to the export speed and figures in September and October. The fact that the price of dried grapes, which was affected by 3 heavy rains, is still fixed has started to worry farmers. Still, the fact that the yield is 180 thousand tons (in previous years it was between 250 thousand tons and 300 thousand tons on average) raises the expectation that prices will increase. For this reason, farmers do not sell more than they need.
