Ukrainian Pea Market Booms: What's Driving the Price Surge?
Due to the current agiotage, prices for peas in Ukrainian ports increased to 15,000 UAH/T.
Currently, prices for yellow peas in the port of Odesa range from 14,000 UAH/t to 14,500 UAH/t. In the Danube ports, the price is up to 15,000 UAH/t or 324€. It should be noted that prices had risen to these levels because of the hype surrounding peas. This week India once again prolonged duty free import till December 31, 2024. The fact that peas can be exported to India and China in the future makes it possible to count on further price increase.Peas in Ukraine have only 20% domestic consumption. It is the presence of foreign markets that makes it possible to predict the trend of increasing crops.
Split peas, which traders have started exporting to the UAE, Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia, also add to the optimism of an increase in crops. Now there is considerable interest of Ukrainian pea producers in its cultivation, as the economic component has become quite attractive. Most of the area under peas was historically concentrated in the south. In the first year of the great war, due to the temporary occupation of parts of the Kherson region and Zaporizhzhia, the square footage practically halved. Further, thanks to Odesa and Mykolaiv, production was increased by 52 thousand tons. In total, production reached 0.5 million tons.
Last year, Ukraine exported 314,000 tons of peas, mostly to TĂĽrkiye.
