Indian Sesame Market Updates

Fluctuating Prices in the Sesame Arena

The sesame market, particularly the white variety, has seen its share of ups and downs recently. Prices for Natural Shortex Sesame have dipped from USD 1,75 per kg to USD 1,43 per kg—a slight decrease of about USD 0,03 to 0,04 per kg. This drop is largely due to heavy rainfall that has raised alarms about potential crop damage, especially in Gujarat, where nearly 70% of the sesame crop has been impacted.

A Closer Look at Regional Crop Conditions

In regions like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, farmers are hopeful thanks to successful sowing. However, they remain on edge about potential weather surprises. Over in Rajasthan, the situation looks grim with 50-60% of the sesame crop suffering considerable damage, which could mean lesser quality produce this season.

The buzz around the arrival of new sesame seeds is growing, with the market expecting about 10,000 to 15,000 tonnes in Gujarat and close to 150,000 tonnes across the country starting from October 15.

Import Challenges and Market Effects

Significant delays in sesame shipments, particularly from Brazil, have thrown a wrench in the works. These hitches are likely to push expected arrivals to between October and November. Forecasters are predicting sesame imports to hover around 80,000 to 100,000 tonnes, with Brazilian sesame priced at USD 1,24 to 1,25 per tonne.

Navigating Through Market Challenges

Despite these import delays, the Indian sesame market is looking at a stable few months ahead, thanks to the ample supplies from the summer harvest. These should help cushion any major price fluctuations until November. Meanwhile, on the global stage, Brazil is all set to contribute a hefty harvest to the market, possibly up to 225,000 tonnes, although logistical issues continue to be a thorn in the side.

What’s Next: Influences at Home and Abroad

The international market's sluggish demand, particularly from China, continues to affect the Indian sesame trade. However, upcoming shipments from Nigeria and Somalia, priced between USD 1,20 and 1,27 per tonne, promise to inject some energy into market activities as the season moves forward.
