Rising Demand for Chinese Lentils as Market Activity Increases

Rising Demand for Chinese Lentils as Market Activity Increases

As the new season of lentils kicks off, both domestic and international markets are showing increased interest in Chinese lentils. Italian canneries, in particular, are praising the quality of lentils from China. However, with reduced planting areas in recent years, there are concerns that prices may rise later in the season. Here’s the latest on the lentil market from Tianjin and Dalian.

Strong Demand from Domestic and International Buyers:

Feedback from market participants indicates that the lentil market is seeing heightened activity. Orders have surged both domestically and from international buyers, particularly from Italy, where Chinese lentils are highly regarded by canneries for their quality. This strong demand is driving stable prices, at least in the short term.

Current Price Stability, But Future Increases Likely:

At present, prices for lentils are predicted to remain stable. FOB prices for organic lentils in Tianjin and Dalian are hovering between $1,500 and $1,540 per tonne (EURO 1352-1388/mt), while conventional lentils are priced between $1,430 and $1,460 per tonne (EURO 1289-1316/mt). However, with the lentil planting area shrinking in recent years and production lower than expected, market experts predict that prices could rise in the coming months as supply tightens.

Italian Canneries Show Strong Preference for Chinese Lentils:

One notable trend is the popularity of Chinese lentils among Italian canneries, where customers have expressed satisfaction with the product’s quality. This could lead to sustained demand from Europe, further influencing price trends in the later part of the season.

The Chinese lentil market is currently active, with both domestic and international orders on the rise. While prices are stable for now, lower production levels may push prices up later in the season. As demand from key markets like Italy continues, it will be important to keep an eye on future price shifts.
