Turkish Figs: Quality on the Rise, But Will High Prices Hinder Exports?
Although Turkish dried figs exports did not start very quickly, producers expect exports to Europe to increase this year due to the higher quality of the product compared to last year. Aegean exporters' unions support farmers in detecting the presence of aflatoxin and ochratoxin with UV lamps before loading. In this way, it is aimed to ensure that the European and American markets, which are particularly sensitive, purchase more confidently and to increase customer capacity, which has decreased due to prices in previous years.
However, there is no change in prices. They remain high compared to other countries of origin, which forces exporters to turn to markets outside of Europe. The fact that Iran has increased exports and given relatively reasonable prices in the last few years has also caused smaller countries to lose.
Serbia, which used to buy from Türkiye in previous years, has not been buying in the last few years. Turkish figs are around 8 dollars, but they are sold for 5 dollars in Serbia. Prices in the local market are around 450 TL(11,88 Euro) for quality figs. Exports made until the end of October will be more decisive in prices.
