Sugar: EU Production Rebounds, but UK Prices Set to Fall

EU sugar production is set to recover to 18.2 million tons in the 2024/25 season, an increase of 1.4 million tons compared to the previous season. Higher beet prices have encouraged farmers to increase the planting area in both the EU and the UK. In Germany, beet plantings rose by 5.7%, resulting in expected production of 4.7 million tons. However, UK beet prices are expected to drop by 17.5% in the 2025/26 season, potentially leading to a reduction in planting areas.

Forecast

Stable sugar prices are expected for the 2024/25 season, but prices could come under pressure in 2025/26 due to higher production and lower demand. A decline to 0.45-0.46 EUR/kg is likely.
