Geopolitical Tensions Drive Südzucker's Earnings Down

Geopolitical Tensions Drive Südzucker's Earnings Down

Südzucker, one of Europe's largest sugar producers, has warned of a significant profit decline for the current fiscal year 2024/25. The company expects both EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) and operating profit to drop significantly in the third quarter, ending in November. In the same quarter last year, EBITDA reached €385 million, and operating profit stood at €268 million. Despite the sluggish start, Südzucker reaffirmed its recently downgraded forecast for the full year, citing continued market volatility due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and uncertainty stemming from the Middle East conflict.

Südzucker had already reduced its financial outlook in mid-September due to accelerating sugar price declines. For the full year, the company now anticipates revenue between €9.5 and €9.9 billion, with EBITDA between €550 and €650 million and operating profit in the range of €175 to €275 million. This is a sharp decline from the previous fiscal year, where Südzucker generated revenue of €10.3 billion, EBITDA of €1.3 billion, and an operating profit of €947 million.

These challenges, influenced by market instability and external geopolitical factors, continue to put pressure on Südzucker’s performance, leading to further caution in their financial expectations.
