Gujarat’s Green Coconut Boom: A Game Changer for Farmers

Gujarat’s Green Coconut Boom: A Game Changer for Farmers

Rising Green Coconut Production in Gujarat

Green coconut production has risen sharply in Gujarat, a state in western cost of India. It's now exceeding 236 million units annually. Over the past decade, the state has expanded its coconut farming area by 4,900 hectares, bringing the total to 26,561 hectares. This growth emphasizes the increasing importance of coconuts in local economies and employment.

Expansion Driven by Government Support

Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel, speaking on World Coconut Day, credited Gujarat’s coconut development to initiatives started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tenure as Chief Minister. Patel emphasized that Gujarat’s coastal land, covering 4.56 million hectares, offers vast potential for expanding coconut cultivation. Currently, production mainly comes from Gir-Somnath, Junagadh, Bhavnagar, Valsad, Kutch, Navsari, and Devbhumi Dwarka, with more room for growth.

Financial Assistance Boosts Growth

The Gujarat government has allocated USD 0.526 millions to support farmers through the Gujarat Coconut Development Program. Farmers receive up to 75% of their cultivation costs, capped at USD 450 per hectare. Additional funding helps with pest management, nutrient support, and planting materials, giving farmers a solid foundation to expand coconut farming.

Expanding Coconut Markets

Gujarat exports about 33% of its coconuts to other states like Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh. Around 20% of coconuts are sold as tender green coconuts, while 42% are harvested as mature coconuts. While available year-round, demand peaks between March and June, when tender coconuts are especially popular.

Conclusion: Gujarat’s Coconut Industry on the Rise

With strong government backing, ideal farming conditions, and growing demand for both green and mature coconuts, Gujarat is set to continue leading in coconut production. Farmers can expect more opportunities as demand for coconuts increases in both local and export markets.
