India to Import 0.40 Million Tonnes of Chickpeas to Stabilize Market

India to Import 0.40 Million Tonnes of Chickpeas to Stabilize Market

Australia's Chickpea Imports to Support India's Supply Needs

India's chickpea market is under pressure as farmers, stockists, and millers continue to sell off their nearby supplies. The current demand for chickpeas hasn't matched expectations, and the available stock will likely only last until the end of this month. However, there is good news on the horizon as India is expected to rely on chickpea imports from Australia to fill the supply gap.

India is now relying on imported chickpeas to meet demand, particularly from Australia, where harvest season is underway. Despite recent rains causing logistical issues in Australia, the country is expected to send 0.40 million tonnes of chickpeas to India in October, November, and December.

Limited Demand Keeps Chickpea Prices in a Tight Range

Traders have begun reducing the sale of chickpeas as the demand in the market remains tepid. The current price of chickpeas, depending on quality, ranges from USD 1,20 to USD 1,25 per kg. Farmers, stockists, and millers are selling the available stocks, but the overall demand is still lower than expected. Although the supply of chickpeas isn't overwhelming, it will last through the month, keeping prices from any drastic changes.

Different Markets, Different Prices

  • Chickpea import prices for October-November deliveries stand at around USD 0,85 per kg, while December prices drop to USD 0,78 per kg.
  • In Delhi, chickpea prices have dipped slightly, sitting at USD 0,75 per kg.
  • In Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, prices hover around USD 0,74 to USD 0,76 per kg.
These prices reflect a market experiencing fluctuations but no significant downturn. Stock levels remain adequate, but the market is yet to see any upward momentum.

Seed Demand Are Stable

The demand for chickpea seeds remains steady, with most current sales being seed-related. Farmers are preparing for what could be a promising season, but much depends on the weather conditions moving forward. Around 20-25% of chickpea consumption has been affected by low prices due to increased imports of peas. By the end of December, approximately 1 million tonnes of peas will have entered India, impacting the chickpea market further.

Expectations for Chickpea Prices in the Coming Months

Analysts predict that chickpea prices may fluctuate between USD 0,73 and USD 0,78 per kg. There is little chance of a significant rise, with only a slight increase of USD 0,10 to 0,20 per kg expected if demand spikes around Diwali. The supply of chickpeas remains steady, but the market isn’t seeing the kind of demand required to push prices significantly higher. Exporters are cautious, and any upward movement will likely be minimal.

Conclusion: Steady but Limited Growth for Chickpea Prices

Given the current supply and demand balance, it’s unlikely that chickpea prices will see a major surge. However, if demand increases during the festive season, prices might rise by USD 0,10 to 0,20 per kg.
