EU Sunflower Oil Exports Drop by 16%: What’s Driving the Decline?

European Union Sees Significant Decline in Sunflower Oil Exports as Global Market Shifts

Between July 1, 2024, and October 22, 2024, the European Union’s sunflower oil exports dropped by 16% compared to the same period last season, totaling 210,500 tons, according to a report by Zerno On-Line, citing the European Commission. This reduction reflects a broader shift in global market dynamics, impacting both exports and imports of sunflower oil.

Key Export Markets for EU Sunflower Oil

Despite the overall decline, the top buyers of EU sunflower oil this season have been:
  • India: 52,800 tons
  • United Kingdom: 42,300 tons
  • United States: 14,900 tons
  • South Africa: 12,600 tons
India continues to dominate as the largest importer, maintaining its strong demand despite the overall downturn in EU exports.

Decline in Sunflower Oil Imports into the EU

The EU has also seen a decline in its own sunflower oil imports, which have fallen by 18% compared to the same period last year. Imports have decreased to 588,800 tons, indicating a tighter market and potentially shifting supply chains.

Outlook: What’s Next for EU Sunflower Oil?

As the global market for vegetable oils faces ongoing fluctuations, the EU’s position in the sunflower oil trade may continue to shift. Factors such as changing demand patterns in key markets, fluctuations in production levels, and competition from other vegetable oils could further influence the EU’s export and import dynamics in the coming months.
