India’s lentil imports totaled around 39,000 tonnes in September 2024. With Australia and Canada as the primary exporters to meet growing domestic demand. The lentils arrived mainly at key ports, with Kolkata managing the largest portion of the imports. Specifically, 13,411 tonnes came from Australia, 2,200 tonnes from the United States, 1,218 tonnes from Russia, and 144 tonnes from Turkey. Of these imports, Kolkata handled 20,000 tonnes, followed by JNPT with 10,897 tonnes, Tuticorin at 7,851 tonnes, Mundra at 252 tonnes, and Chennai at 243 tonnes.
Urad Imports Surge
In September 2024, India’s urad imports hit an estimated 83,483 tonnes, primarily sourced from Myanmar and Brazil. Myanmar contributed the majority with 76,000 tonnes, while Brazil supplied 7,484 tonnes. The imports arrived mainly at Chennai, JNPT, and Kolkata, with Chennai handling the largest volume of 72,250 tonnes, followed by 3,983 tonnes at JNPT and 7,250 tonnes at Kolkata. The steady influx reflects the country's focus on stabilizing the urad supply amidst rising demand.
Domestic Sowing Scenario
With the beginning of the sowing season, the Indian government has raised the minimum support price for lentils by $0,033 per kg, aiming to encourage local farmers and stabilise market prices. The increased support price is expected to drive more domestic production and reduce dependency on imports over time.
