Cocoa Production in Brazil: Tradition, Innovation, and Sustainable Partnerships

Cocoa Production in Brazil: Tradition, Innovation, and Sustainable Partnerships

Cocoa's Economic Importance in Brazil

Cocoa production holds traditional and economic significance in Brazil, particularly in the regions of Bahia and Pará, which together account for most of the country's cocoa output. As one of Latin America's largest cocoa producers, Brazil occupies a prominent position in the global market.

Bahia Regains National Leadership in Cocoa Production

In 2023, Bahia reclaimed its position as the leading cocoa-producing state in Brazil, surpassing Pará with a total production of 139,011 tons, as reported by the Municipal Agricultural Survey (PAM) conducted by IBGE. This resurgence was supported by over R$ 100 million in investments from the State Government through the Regional Development and Action Company (CAR), aiming to strengthen the cocoa production system.

Expansion of Sustainable Cocoa Cultivation

Recent years have seen the diversification of cocoa production in Brazil, marked by the adoption of sustainable cultivation techniques and genetic improvement practices. These advancements enhance the plants' resistance to environmental challenges, improving productivity and supporting long-term sustainability in the industry.

Challenges Facing the Cocoa Market

Despite progress, the Brazilian cocoa sector faces persistent challenges, including pest threats like witches' broom, climate change impacts, and the necessity for sustainable farming practices. The demand for innovative solutions is clear, as technological advancements become essential for addressing these issues.

Blockchain Technology for Sustainable Cocoa Production

One of the notable trends in Brazilian cocoa farming is the use of blockchain technology to enhance traceability and certify sustainable practices. Through a partnership with the Southern Bahia Cocoa Producers’ Cooperative (COOPERCABRUCA), Dimitra, a global agtech company, is working to implement blockchain in cocoa production. This partnership will provide responsible agricultural practices and ensure environmental monitoring, making cocoa production more transparent and reliable.

Partnership with COOPERCABRUCA: Enhancing Smallholder Livelihoods

COOPERCABRUCA encourages smallholder farmers to go beyond cocoa bean sales, promoting the production and marketing of high-quality cocoa products. The partnership with Dimitra not only supports sustainable practices but also aims to improve the economic well-being of smallholder farmers in Southern Bahia, giving them access to critical markets.

Technological Innovation as a Solution to Industry Challenges

In an interview with Compre Rural’s Content Director, Thiago Pereira, Carlos Ribeiro, Sales Director at Dimitra Brasil, discussed how technology is a powerful tool in addressing the difficulties faced by the cocoa industry today. By introducing blockchain and other digital solutions, Dimitra and COOPERCABRUCA are working to establish a resilient, sustainable cocoa production model that benefits farmers and the environment alike.
