Indian Turmeric Industry Gears Up To Boost Production

Turmeric Conference Drives Vision for Future Growth

The Annual Global Turmeric Conference, recently hosted by the NCDEX with Indian turmeric industry growth agenda. NCDEX is an National Institute of Commodity Markets and Research (NICR) in Mumbai. Overall brought together more than 200 industry participants from farmer producer organizations, traders, processors, exporters, researchers, and scientists. This gathering aimed to explore strategies that could elevate turmeric production and improve export opportunities for the spice.

Maharashtra’s Leading Role in Turmeric Production

During the event, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Eknath Shinde highlighted the state's prominent role in India’s turmeric production. Maharashtra cultivates turmeric extensively, known as the "Golden Spice". Which contributes nearly one-third of the country's turmeric supply. The Balasaheb Thackeray Haridra Research and Training Center, led by Hemant Patil, has made significant strides in increasing turmeric output. With strong support for farmers and entrepreneurs aligning with the Central Government’s growth directive.

The Establishment of a Turmeric Board

Former MP Hemant Shriram Patil emphasized the progress made in turmeric pricing, which has surged from a range of USD 0,60 - 0,70 per kg to between USD 1,55 per kg and as high as USD 4,2 per kg due to efforts by both Union and State governments. A Turmeric Board has now been formed, aiming to provide better market access, empower primary producers, drive product innovation, and foster a more supportive industry environment.

Promoting Turmeric’s Benefits Globally

Prominent speaker Acharya Balkrishna from Patanjali Foods advocated for more vigorous global promotion of turmeric. By citing its health benefits that are well-known in India. Arun Raste, MD & CEO of NCDEX, closed the event by affirming the importance of these collaborative efforts to position India more prominently on the global turmeric stage.
