Vietnam’s Fresh Coconuts Making a Splash in Global Markets

Vietnam’s Fresh Coconuts Making a Splash in Global Markets

Vietnam’s fresh coconut exports are gaining traction in major markets such as the United States, China, and the United Kingdom. This rising demand creates a promising outlook for Vietnam’s fruit export industry. Fresh coconuts are well-positioned to achieve significant growth in the coming years.

Strong Coconut Production Capacity

Vietnam ranks sixth globally in coconut production, with roughly 200,000 hectares under cultivation and an annual output of 2 million tonnes. This robust production capacity supports exports to 15 international markets, with over 30,000 tonnes shipped annually.

Key Export Agreements and Market Expansion

Vietnam has worked diligently to expand coconut export channels. In 2016, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) established an export protocol with China, boosting sales. This was a key milestone. Vina T&T Group, a leader in coconut exports, entered the American market in 2017, where Thai coconuts had previously dominated.

Growing Interest in Vietnamese Coconuts

The sweetness and high quality of Vietnamese coconuts have caught the attention of international buyers, with strong demand reported in the US, Canada, the Republic of Korea, and China. Recently, China, which consumes over 4 billion coconuts annually and produces only 10% of its demand, granted an export code to Vietnamese coconuts. This provides a strategic entry point for Vietnam into the Chinese market, where Vina T&T has already secured agreements with local companies.

Increasing Export Values

MARD estimates that Vietnamese fresh coconuts generated over $120 million in export revenue in the first ten months of 2024, ranking them sixth in fruit export value. With increasing global demand, coconuts offer Vietnam an opportunity to reach MARD’s ambitious $10 billion fruit export target.

Conclusion:

With growing market opportunities and quality advantages, Vietnamese coconuts are set for continued success in global markets. With strategic trade agreements in place and strong product appeal, the rising demand in countries like China indicates that Vietnam’s fresh coconut exports could soon become a top player. This momentum could help the country achieve record-breaking export milestones.
