Onion Price Surge Strains Budgets Across India

In recent weeks, onion prices have surged dramatically in wholesale markets across India, climbing from USD 0,48–0,72 per kg to USD 0,84–0,96 per kg, with certain regions seeing prices as high as USD 0,96 per kg as of November 8, 2024. This sharp increase has left many consumers struggling to manage household budgets amid the rising costs of this essential ingredient.

Impact on Vendors and Consumers

Market vendors in Delhi report that rising wholesale prices have directly affected retail rates. “The price of onions has gone from USD 0,72 to USD 0,84 per kg. We source them directly from the mandi, so the price hike impacts our selling price,” a vendor shared. Although sales have slowed, demand remains steady as onions are a staple in Indian cuisine.

Consumers, however, are feeling the pressure. Faiza, a buyer in Delhi, said, “Onion prices have shot up to USD 0,84 per kg, impacting our daily food habits. I urge the government to take steps to reduce vegetable prices, especially for everyday essentials.”

High Prices Across Major Cities

The price surge extends beyond Delhi, impacting consumers in Mumbai as well. Dr. Khan, a resident of Mumbai, noted, “Onion and garlic prices have doubled. I bought 5 kilograms of onions for USD 4,32, which has severely affected our household budget.”

Despite the strain, vendors highlight that inflation and supply chain challenges are likely contributors. “The price increase is part of overall inflation. Prices have risen from USD 0,72 to USD 0,90 per kg, but since onions are crucial to daily meals, people continue to buy them,” said Kishore, a market seller in Mumbai.

Conclusion

As onion prices soar across the country, consumers nationwide are grappling with higher grocery bills. While many hope prices will stabilize soon, the current increase is placing substantial financial pressure on households across India.
