France Increases Wheat and Corn Production Forecast

France Increases Wheat and Corn Production Forecast

The French Ministry of Agriculture has updated its production forecasts for the 2024 agricultural season. While estimates for soft wheat and corn have been raised, forecasts for sunflower and beet sugar production have been revised downward, with sugar output expected to decline significantly.

Wheat Production Forecast Adjusted

The ministry now projects 25.6 million tonnes of soft wheat production for 2024, up slightly from last month's estimate of 25.4 million tonnes. However, this revised figure remains 27% lower than 2023 production levels, marking the lowest wheat output since the 1980s. Adverse weather, including persistent heavy rains, has hampered planting and crop development, contributing to this significant reduction.

Corn Production Outlook Improves

Corn production, including seed crops, is expected to reach 14.6 million tonnes in 2024, up from the previous estimate of 14.5 million tonnes. This marks a 13% increase over 2023 levels and is 10% higher than the 2019-2023 average. The expansion of cultivated areas has been the primary driver of this growth, with harvesting France Increases currently underway.

Sugar and Sunflower Estimates Lowered

In contrast, the ministry has downgraded its forecast for sunflower and beet sugar production, citing unfavorable growing conditions. Sugar production is now expected to fall below earlier estimates, signaling a challenging season for this sector.

Conclusion

France, the European Union’s leading grain producer, is experiencing mixed fortunes in the 2024 agricultural season. While wheat and corn projections are encouraging, sugar production challenges highlight the impacts of unpredictable weather and shifting cultivation patterns.
