Rajasthan’s Moong Production Poised for Record Highs
Moong Production Expected to Exceed 1.8 Million Tonnes
The Agriculture Department of Rajasthan estimates the state’s total moong production for the 2024-25 financial year to be around 1.8 million tonnes. This significant contribution accounts for nearly half of India’s total moong output. Government agencies have purchased only 11.4% of the crop at the declared minimum support price (MSP).Despite the 2018 launch of the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Income Protection Abhiyan, which aimed to procure 25% of commodities at MSP, moong purchases have been limited to 20.33 million quintals (or 2.03 million tonnes), falling short of the estimated production. This procurement cap has created obstacles for farmers, many of whom rely on government purchases for financial stability.
MSP Versus Market Prices: A Widening Gap
This year, the MSP for moong is set at $0,87 per kg. But on the other hand, the market prices in Rajasthan range from $0,40 to $0,70 per kg. This significant gap leaves farmers struggling to secure fair compensation for their produce, amplifying the need for broader procurement initiatives.Policy Limitations: A Major Farmer Concerns
As a matter of fact, experts warn that the 25% procurement cap could exacerbate financial challenges for farmers. Mostly in Rajasthan, where high production often leads to surplus stock. Therefore, farmer organizations argue that registering for moong procurement under current guidelines remains difficult, further limiting access to the MSP framework. As production soars, calls for policy adjustments grow louder. Farmers advocate for increased procurement quotas and streamlined registration processes. With Rajasthan leading the nation in moong output, addressing these issues is critical to ensuring farmer welfare and market stability.
