Vietnam’s Pepper Exports Hit $1 Billion Milestone
Vietnam Pepper Exports Cross $1 Billion Mark in 2024
Vietnam has achieved a remarkable milestone, with pepper exports surpassing $1 billion USD in the first 10 months of 2024. According to the General Department of Customs, the country exported 218,732 tonnes of pepper valued at $1,11 billion USD.While export volumes declined 3% compared to 2023, the 47% rise in export value underscores the impact of higher global prices. This marks a significant turnaround for Vietnam’s pepper industry, which has faced challenges in recent years.
Soaring Prices Drive Record Revenue
The average export price of pepper surged by 51.5%, reaching $5,08 per kg during the first 10 months. This price increase played a critical role in helping Vietnam’s pepper sector exceed the $1 billion mark, the highest in the last decade.Projections suggest that by year-end, pepper export revenue could reach $1,3 billion, setting a new industry record.
Key Export Markets: The U.S. Leads the Way
Vietnam’s top pepper markets reflect strong growth across multiple regions:- United States: The largest importer of Vietnamese pepper, accounting for 29.3% of total volume and generating 30.4% of revenue. Exports to the U.S. grew by 48% in volume and 95.2% in value, totaling 64,112 tonnes worth $337.8 million USD.
- Germany: Recorded 82.3% volume growth and a 140% surge in export value, with 14,346 tonnes valued at $79.6 million USD.
- UAE: The third-largest importer, purchasing 13,575 tonnes, an increase of 35.9% in volume.
Despite overall gains, exports to China fell sharply, declining 84% year-on-year to just 9,252 tonnes. This marked a significant setback for a market that has historically been one of Vietnam’s top buyers.
Innovation and Sustainability in Pepper Farming
Vietnam continues to lead the global pepper market by adopting innovative farming practices. Farmers are increasingly embracing organic cultivation and mixed farming systems, integrating pepper with coffee and fruit trees to boost productivity and reduce reliance on chemical inputs. These methods not only enhance yields but also improve pest control, contributing to sustainable growth.Export Infrastructure Strengthens Vietnam’s Market Position
Vietnam is home to over 200 pepper processing facilities, with 15 major exporters holding 70% market share. The industry has also developed advanced processing plants capable of meeting stringent international standards, producing high-quality black pepper, white pepper, and value-added products for global markets.Opportunities in the UAE and Middle East
The recently signed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Vietnam and the UAE is expected to further boost pepper exports. With tariffs eliminated on 99% of goods, Vietnam is well-positioned to expand its market share in the Middle East, particularly with clean, organic, and Halal-certified pepper products.Click here to reach our trading platfrom CMBroker
