Meanwhile, prices in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, have climbed to $1,31 per kg, and in Narayanpeth, Telangana, they range between $1,30 and $1,35 per kg, significantly higher than the minimum support price (MSP) of $0,91 per kg .

In Akola and Amravati mandis in Maharashtra, prices for pigeon pea stand at $1,14 to $1,25 per kg, and in Chennai, the price hovers around $1,14 per kg.The high prices are attributed to strong domestic demand and limited supply. With state supply corporations running low on stock, millers are eagerly awaiting the new harvest. However, purchases will depend on the crop’s moisture content and production volume.
Increased Demand for Desi Pigeon Pea
The demand for desi pigeon peas has surged due to a growing supply shortage. State supply corporations have limited inventories. Millers are preparing to buy once the new crop arrives with acceptable moisture levels. Millers' purchases will help keep rates in check, and price stability will depend on the final production volume.Basavaraj Engin, President of the Karnataka Lal Pigeon Pea Producers Association, said the crop in Kalaburagi district is maturing in many areas. Harvesting has already started in some regions.
Increase in Acreage for 2024-25 Kharif Season
This Kharif season, farmers have increased pigeon pea cultivation by 14%, reaching 4.65 million hectares, up from 4.07 million hectares last year. The expansion reflects farmers' optimism driven by high prices in previous seasons. However, the final production will depend on weather conditions during the harvest. Conclusion: A Critical Harvest for Pigeon Pea
As new pigeon pea crops begin to arrive, the next few months will be critical for market prices. High demand and limited supply are driving prices up. Millers are expected to make strategic purchases, which could stabilize rates once the crop arrives in full. The increase in acreage offers hope for a larger harvest, but the final outcome depends on production quality and volume.Click here to reach our trading platfrom CMBroker
