Rice Procurement in Punjab and Haryana Drops by 7%

Punjab and Haryana Report Lower Procurement

Rice procurement in Punjab and Haryana, two vital contributors to the Central Pool managed by the Food Corporation of India (FCI), ended this season with a 7.4% decline. The total procurement reached 15.15 million tonnes, down from 16.36 million in 2023. Despite a bumper harvest, the government has not extended the procurement timeline.

Punjab, the largest supplier to the Central Pool, concluded procurement on November 30, recording 11.55 million tonnes, a 6.9% drop from last year’s 12.41 million tonnes. In Haryana, procurement ended on November 15, with 3.59 million tonnes purchased, marking an 8.9% decrease compared to 3.94 million tonnes in 2023.

Nationwide Procurement Target

Across India, the government has set a target to procure 49.21 million tonnes of rice from the kharif season in 2024-25, following an upward revision for Bihar. As of December 3, 20.07 million tonnes of rice had been procured nationwide, 2.4% lower than the 20.57 million tonnes purchased by the same date last year.

Noteworthy increases were seen in Andhra Pradesh, where procurement rose to 0.397 million tonnes compared to 0.142 million tonnes last year. Purchases climbed by 38% in Chhattisgarh, totalling 1.318 million tonnes against 0.955 million tonnes a year ago.

Regional Highlights

  • Uttar Pradesh: Procurement increased by 25%, reaching 0.924 million tonnes from 0.74 million tonnes last year. Both western and eastern regions contributed to the rise.
  • Uttarakhand: Purchases dropped by 18.5%, with total procurement at 0.33 million tonnes, down from 0.405 million tonnes.
  • Tamil Nadu: The state-reported a 6.5% decline in procurement, with 0.346 million tonnes in 2023 compared to 0.37 million tonnes in 2023.
  • Telangana: Procurement improved slightly, rising by 2.5% to 1.413 million tonnes from 1.379 million tonnes.

Closing Thoughts

Rice procurement across India shows a mix of increases and decreases, reflecting varied regional crop conditions and procurement timelines. States like Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have seen significant growth, while Punjab and Haryana, though major contributors, reported lower outputs this season. Procurement activities will continue in several states until March 2025, as regional dynamics shape the overall performance.
