India: Cluster-Based Strategy For Cashew Exports

India: Cluster-Based Strategy For Cashew Exports

Efforts to Regain India’s Cashew Market Share

APEDA has taken targeted steps to position Indian cashews as a premium global product. Cashews are among APEDA’s 25-star products, and the organization plans to strengthen their branding and marketing. According to APEDA board member Parashram Patil, the initiative will focus on promoting the health benefits of Indian cashews.

The agency is using a cluster-based strategy, designating Kollam in Kerala and Chandgad in Maharashtra as hubs for production and export growth.

Expanding Export Opportunities with Value-Added Products

APEDA is exploring ways to diversify cashew exports. It is promoting products like de-oiled cashew shells, cashew apples, and cashew gum. Cashew apple derivatives, such as pectin, juices, jams, and alcoholic beverages, are gaining attention for their antioxidant properties.

Cashew gum, widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries, is another product APEDA is pushing for exports. In FY24, India exported 3,508 tonnes of cashew nut shell liquid, earning USD 1.93 million. Additionally, the country exported 9,714 tonnes of cardanol to markets like China, Vietnam, South Korea, and Europe.

Infrastructure Support for Exporters

APEDA is helping exporters with schemes like the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS). This program provides funds for upgrading infrastructure, improving cold storage, and ensuring better quality. The organization also organizes trade fairs, forums, and training programs to connect exporters with global buyers.

The machinery subsidy scheme offers a 40% subsidy on costs up to USD 240,000. Exporters can use this to modernize their operations and enhance efficiency.

Challenges in the Global Market

India’s global cashew market share has fallen from 80% to just 8%. Exports declined sharply from USD 917 million in 2017-18 to USD 368 million in 2023-24. Increased imports, outdated processing techniques, and stiff competition from Vietnam are the main reasons for this drop.

Patil urged exporters to adopt advanced processing methods and scale up their operations. These measures are essential to reclaim India’s position in the global cashew market.

Conclusion

APEDA’s focus on branding, clusters, and value-added products is a step towards reviving India’s cashew exports. However, exporters must modernize operations and meet global standards to overcome challenges and regain their market dominance.
