Mustard Sowing in Gujarat Falls Behind by 41% This Season

Gujarat’s Mustard Sowing Faces Significant Setbacks

The latest report from the State Agriculture Department of Gujarat reveals that mustard sowing in the state has fallen short by 41% compared to the same period last year. All major mustard-producing areas in Gujarat are reporting delayed sowing, reflecting a challenging season for this essential Rabi oilseed crop.

In the current season, mustard has been sown across 1,80,300 hectares in Gujarat. In contrast, during the same period last season, the crop covered 3,05,200 hectares. This represents a shortfall of 1,24,900 hectares (40.92%), as highlighted in the department’s latest data.

North Gujarat: Leading but Lagging

North Gujarat, the state’s largest mustard-growing region, has reported a sowing area of 1,53,300 hectares so far this season. By the end of January last year, the region had planted on 2,41,100 hectares, marking a decline of 87,800 hectares (36.41%).

In Kutch, it has been sown in 20,800 hectares during the current season, compared to 30,700 hectares by the same time last year. This translates to a shortfall of 9,900 hectares (32.24%).

Saurashtra Experiences the Steepest Decline

Saurashtra, a significant mustard-producing region, has seen the sharpest decline in sowing. Mustard has been planted in only 3,500 hectares, compared to 24,900 hectares during the corresponding period last season. This is a staggering shortfall of 21,400 hectares (85.94%).

Central Gujarat’s mustard sowing is also struggling, with only 2,700 hectares planted so far, compared to 8,600 hectares by the same period last year. This marks a shortfall of 5,900 hectares (68.60%).

Conclusion: A Challenging Season for Mustard in Gujarat

The delayed sowing across Gujarat reflects significant challenges for mustard cultivation this season. Adverse conditions and other factors have contributed to a steep decline in sowing areas, particularly in regions like Saurashtra and Central Gujarat. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the final outcome of this year’s production.
