Himachal Pradesh's Unique Red Rice Gains Attention

Red rice from Himachal Pradesh, valued at $9,60 per kg, continues to attract significant demand due to its unique nutritional and medicinal qualities. Farmers have cultivated this aromatic crop for over 10,000 years, making it a staple in managing conditions such as blood pressure, constipation, and leucorrhoea.

At the Lavi fair in Rampur district, Shimla, this traditional grain has become a crowd favorite. Visitors are particularly drawn to popular varieties like Chhohartu and Paija, which stand out for their flavor and health benefits.

Health Benefits and Varieties of Red Rice

Paija, a sugar-free organic variety, is especially beneficial for diabetes patients. Its soup is also believed to help with digestion and diarrhea, making it a preferred choice for health-conscious consumers. Amarnath, a seasoned red rice seller, explained that this rice has even earned a Presidential honor and carries a registered patent.

To cater to the demand, farmers cultivate various red rice types, including:
  • Chhohartu from Rohru
  • Sukara Tian from Chamba
  • Lal Jhinni from Kangra
  • Jatu and Matali from Kullu
These varieties not only reflect the agricultural diversity of Himachal Pradesh but also highlight its potential in producing high-value crops.

Cultivation Practices and Regional Insights

Farmers grow red rice in regions with ample water and fertile soil. For example, in Shimla district, red rice spans 213 hectares in locations like Surukoot, Kuthru, and Ganvi. Similarly, Chamba district dedicates 107 hectares to this crop across areas such as Mani, Pukhri, and Saluni.

The crop thrives in hot and humid conditions, combined with nutrient-rich, thick soil. These specific environmental factors give the rice its distinct aroma and exceptional nutritional properties.

Conclusion: Red Rice Shines as Himachal's Agricultural Gem

Himachal Pradesh’s red rice stands out as a symbol of the state's agricultural heritage, especially with its growing popularity in fairs like Lavi. As more people recognize its health benefits and unique flavors, the demand continues to rise. With a premium price of $9,60 per kg, this crop underscores the potential for traditional, health-focused produce in a competitive market. Looking ahead, increased awareness and improved cultivation practices could further enhance its prominence in both local and international markets.
