Cumin Sowing Surges by 24% in Gujarat as Weather Turns Cooler

Cold Weather Fuels a Rapid Rise in Cumin Sowing

Recent snowfall in India's northern hills has brought cooler temperatures to Gujarat, boosting cumin cultivation significantly. According to the Gujarat Agriculture Department, cumin sowing jumped by 51,000 hectares within a week, reaching 262,100 hectares as of December 9. This marks a sharp increase of 24.15 percent compared to 211,100 hectares on December 2.

Despite this progress, cumin sowing in Gujarat remains 13,700 hectares behind last year’s total of 275,800 hectares. Farmers hope to close this gap as the season progresses.

Saurashtra Leads While Other Regions Struggle

In Saurashtra, Gujarat’s largest cumin-producing region, sowing reached 166,800 hectares, slightly surpassing last year’s total of 166,400 hectares. The marginal increase of 400 hectares reflects steady progress in this key region.

In Kutch, cumin sowing totaled 41,900 hectares, down from 43,500 hectares last year. The shortfall of 1,600 hectares represents a 3.67 percent decrease, highlighting localized challenges.

North Gujarat reported a significant drop, with sowing down to 47,800 hectares from 60,000 hectares last year. The gap of 12,200 hectares—a 20.35 percent decline—reflects the region’s struggle to match previous planting levels.

Central Gujarat’s cumin sowing fell to 5,700 hectares, compared to 6,000 hectares last year. The decrease of 300 hectares indicates a modest reduction in activity.

Progress Narrowing the Gap in Sowing

Thanks to the cooler weather, Gujarat has significantly reduced the gap in cumin sowing compared to last year. From lagging by over 64,700 hectares earlier in the season, the state now trails by just 13,700 hectares. The rapid sowing progress in Saurashtra and other regions signals optimism among farmers.

However, challenges persist in areas like North Gujarat and Kutch, where slower sowing could impact the overall output.

Finally, An Optimistic Approach is Expected

As weather conditions remain favorable, Gujarat’s cumin farmers are optimistic about achieving near parity with last year’s sowing levels. Regions like Saurashtra are driving this progress, while farmers in lagging areas hope to accelerate planting in the remaining weeks of the season.
