Coriander Sowing Picks Up Pace in Gujarat as Temperatures Drop

Coriander Sowing Picks Up Pace in Gujarat as Temperatures Drop

Cooler Weather Ignites Coriander Planting

Snowfall in northern hilly states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand has caused a dip in temperatures across Gujarat. This change has provided ideal conditions for coriander planting, leading to a dramatic rise in sowing activity over the past week. However, the total area sown remains significantly behind last year’s levels.

Sowing in Gujarat: Gains but Still Lagging

Coriander sowing in Gujarat reached 62,400 hectares by December 9, marking a sharp increase of 20,700 hectares or 49.64 percent compared to the previous week. Despite this progress, the state’s sowing area is still 71.99 percent below last year’s 2,22,800 hectares for the same period.

Saurashtra: Leading but Struggling

As Gujarat’s largest coriander-producing region, Saurashtra has contributed 60,800 hectares to the current sowing tally. Yet, this figure is far below last year’s 1,66,400 hectares, showing a decline of 1,05,400 hectares or 63.46 percent. Farmers in the region are feeling the pressure of this reduced planting activity.

Central Gujarat: A Steep Decline

In Central Gujarat, coriander sowing has dropped drastically. By December 9, only 100 hectares were planted, compared to 500 hectares during the same period last year. This represents a sharp fall of 400 hectares or 80 percent, raising concerns among local farmers.

North Gujarat: Modest Planting Levels

North Gujarat has also witnessed a significant drop in coriander cultivation. As of December 9, sowing reached just 300 hectares, well below last year’s 800 hectares. This 62.50 percent decline reflects the challenges faced in this region.

Kutch: Falling Behind Expectations

The coriander sowing area in Kutch stands at 1,200 hectares, a noticeable decrease from the 2,500 hectares recorded during the same period last year. This represents a reduction of 1,300 hectares or 52 percent, highlighting the difficulties farmers face in this key region.

Conclusion: Can Sowing Recover?

While cooler temperatures have boosted coriander sowing activity in Gujarat, the overall acreage still trails last year’s levels by a wide margin. Key regions like Saurashtra, Central Gujarat, and Kutch remain under pressure to catch up. Farmers and agricultural experts are hopeful that favorable weather will continue to drive sowing activity in the coming weeks.
